I went to a conference session on this very topic several years ago.  LLLI
has a statement on bf and dental caries.  The basic gist of the
research/statement is that bf toddlers have decay in spite of nursing not
because of it.  The ADA also says babies should be weaned by one year.  I
would encourage the mom in continued nursing.  I'm not sure the LLL web site
has a copy of their statement.  If they don't I'd be glad to send it
privately.  I would certainly encourage continued nursing especially with
the pain and trauma the toddler will experience.  Kimme Scherer RN and LLLL
