Although our resident Anthropologist may have a more complete answer, the
issue of no early breastfeeding in some cultures was NOT reported to be
related to fear of the baby's death (this was often reflected in choosing
not to NAME a baby for up to one year) but ratehr beliefs about colostrum
or early milk (dirty, not right for a newborn, too thick, and the like). In
some cases, a mother with mature milk and copious supply would suckle the
newborn while an older child (usually walking) would happily suckle the new
mother and thus "get rid" of the milk not considered suitable for the new
baby. When her good milk was in and new baby was ready, they got back
together. Keep in mind that mother and baby were NOT separated during this
period; they simply did not nurse.
