This scenario is astounding to me. First, why are your instructors becoming
defensive? A true teacher recognizes that (particularily in medicine) new
information is constantly being discovered and what was true yesturday is not so
today. Secondly, it is common knowledge that what is in a textbook is old
information before it even goes to print. It is generally thought that
information is 5-10 years old in most texts, that is why they are revised usually every
5 years. If I was in this program I would definately have second thoughts
about remaining, not because the info is old but because of the reaction of the
faculty. New info should be welcomed and shared and special interests and
expertise of students capitalized upon.

I agree with the previous poster, who suggested bringing in the new
information. I would give the faculty the chance to copy and distribute the new info
and if they refuse do it. I would do it myself for my classmates. I would
even consider going to the dean if they refuse to upgrade their own knowledge
level and then share that with their students. (Just for the record twice in my
undergraduate program I did go to the dean about two different problems with
two different instructers) .

One of the first things I would distribute are the new AAP guidelines along
with the AAFP guidelines. THe AAP has also recently given out newer
guidelines specifically for jaundice.

Good luck, Chris
