Something I haven't seen in the recent posting. (Or maybe I just
missed it.) The first case that raised the question of transmission
via breastmilk was a case where a mom had a post-CS blood
transfusion before blood was tested. When she subsequently became
HIV positive after having no other "risk factors" it was assumed she
got it from the blood. (I don't know if it was shown that that
blood sample was infected or not.) Then when baby bacame HIV+ it
appeared the only possible route was through mom's milk.

As I understand it, while this seemed the most logical conclusion,
there were a couple factors not given a lot of weight. First, mom's
pre-CS status was assumed negative, but she had not been previously
tested. Second, baby reportedly had some kind of skin condition
(exzema?) and could have gotten the virus from surface contact with
mom and introduction through that potential blood contact.

So some questions remained about this first "proven" transmission
via milk. I haven't kept up with any further cases where
pre-delivery transmission was supposedly ruled out.

Winnie
