Jane,

Perhaps, looking at who needs help the most in promoting, protecting and
furthering breastfeeding initiation/duration would be a good start. Is it the
nursing staff? pedi's? neonatologists? the moms? Educationally for all staff
Jay's post re Hale's book made me think about other educational materials, as
well, maybe ongoing as in subscriptions to journals for the units, the Academy of
BF Medicine, JHL, LLL's BF Abstracts. Perhaps, giving all staff Hertz's
Little Green Book or some other pocket reference. Posting reprints of NICU policy
via Rush Mother's Milk Club or info from Nancy Wight's site so that
breastfeeding/breastmilk lis established sooner rather than later for premies.

Depending on how much money is available, wouldn't it be a dream if you could
invite a doc or LC/nursing staff who established Baby Friendly in their hosp.
to spend a day or two on your unit....

For moms, I hate the thought of giving them "things" when they already have
the best "thing" in the world-baby. But maybe a breastfeeding bag that
includes a book/pamphlet from LLL, a fridge magnet with resources for support/help,
things along those lines.

Since I know you and your expertise, I'm sure you'll come up with some
wonderful way to spend the money wisely. Being in private practice, I hear most
from moms that the TLC and help they receive from staff is always priceless.
