Hello> I also have been talking with a mother who was told by her Family
Practicioner to stop breastfeeding because the baby was 'lactose
intolerant'. He convinced her to use Soy formula for the weekend as a test
run. Unfortunately, the baby was symptom free..no gas..slept well, etc.
Mother became extremely guilt ridden about still wanting to breastfeed and
had all sorts of pressure to quit from her family, who thought it terrible
that she torture the baby with this gas problem.
She had previously breastfeed for over a year and just couldn't bear the
thought of not repeating this relationship with this infant...so she
called
everyone and anyone in hopes of finding a better answer than going off
breast. (I give her a A++ for persistance) Besides me she also talked to
P.G. (Do you remember her P.G.?) and LeLeche and called LeLeche
international, plus many staff nurses.. What ended up happening is she
mixed lactaid with Formula (I know..it would have been better to mix it
with breastmilk..but unfortunately she did it this way...who's advise I'm
not sure) and gave it to baby just prior to breastfeeding. She had good
results with this and was satisfied with babies comfort level, and
decreased gassy problem. She was able to continue breastfeeding.

I want to say that I was immensely impressed with her devoted search of a
way to continue breastfeeding and that the support she received from all
the different sources (other than her family and doctor) kept her on
track.
We all deserve a pat on the back...right??
