I tell parents that breastfeeding babies tend to either burp by accident
(and I imitate a mildly rude burping noise‹it comes naturally to me) or they
donıt burp.  I recommend 10-20 seconds of patting and then quit.  You should
see how violently and long some new parents are taught to thump on their
babiesı backs.

As far as encouraging toddler nursing:  Iıve always viewed breast milk as
the ultimate medicine and needed for the ³full course² even when a little
coercion is needed.
