As a postpartum doula I once paid by my client ($20 per hour) to go eat with
her and her first baby in an elegant restaurant here in Portland, Oregon. Her
purpose? She was accustomed to eating in nice restaurants and she wanted to
nurse her new baby in public for the first time with an advocate beside her
in case anyone gave her a bad time about it. She wasn't sure she had the
confidence to stand up for herself the first time with breastfeeding being
new to her besides. I was secretly hoping someone would dare, but we must
have looked too confident. I give my clients a little card put out by the
Oregon Health Division quoting a bill signed into law last year stating that
a woman may breastfeed her child in a public place. They can just show this
card to busybodies and send them back to their seats. How I wish it was
common to see women nursing their babies all over the place. That would be
enough already to make women feel funny about feeding their babies formula.
