I have seen several infants recently who were rooted and latched well when
nursing within an hour after birth but were extremely fussy popping on and off
the breast and crying. However, when turned to their other side they nursed
well without fussiness. In the last two cases I noticed that both babies had
marked "cone heads" and I'm wondering if anyone else has seen this? I'm
thinking that the fussiness on one side is due to a sore head or shoulder from
a tight fit coming through the pelvis/birth canal. I know in one case it
definitely was not due to a difference in milk supply because we finally were
able to get the baby to latch on the other breast by laying him on his "good
side" upside down (with his head toward the foot of the bed) (mom was feeding
in the side lying reclining position).
