I was advised 30 yrs ago to try this with my 3rd child-the proverbial "spitty baby." She was a public menace hurling up large quantities of milk after feeds. This proved helpful although she continued to spit up milk & ultimately solids until she was almost 3. I had a good milk supply and a strong let down where she gulped and I could hear the bubbles rumbling around in her tummy. She was obviously uncomfortable. Removing her from the breast & offering a burp didn't seem to upset her after the first few times, and the burps usually came up readily. I made sure to burp her well before gently nursing her off to sleep or she made quite a mess afterward. Keeping her upright after feeding didn't seem to make any difference in keeping the milk down, but the burp breaks did.

Does anyone know of any documentation for the practice of taking a young (under 3 mos) baby off the breast one or more times during a feed to bring up a bubble, in cases where baby seldom settles for more than a short time after a feed, spits up a lot after feeds, or seems restless/unhappy at the breast?
If you have used this technique and it has led to an improvement in the baby, please post about your experience
