The interesting thing about the original study is that the bacterial count of
freshly expressed breastmilk left at room temperature for 10 hours was
compared with that same mother's milk which had been refrigerated for the same
length of time. The bottom line is that there was no significant difference in
bacterial count of milk left at room temperature vs that milk that was
refrigerated. What was also interesting was that in some instances (not all), the
bacterial count of the milk left at room temp was LESS than the aliquot that was
refrigerated. In some cases, the room temp milk at 10 hours had less bacteria
than the milk that was freshly expressed and cultured immediately thereafter.
