Or, perhaps it is because it takes fewer male members of the society to keep
the population. One male can produce an endless (presumptively) amount of
offspring each year, while each female can experience only one successful
incubation per year....

Perhaps it is because females gestate and nourish the young, so they have to
be tougher for the species to survive?
