i must say i like the description "baby buckets" but the important thing to
remember is that they are not just car seats. they used to be called baby
seats, and all of my children were past infancy before the newest versions
were invented, where the seat simply clips in and out of the car seat base.
because it is "intended" for these to be "portable" most people believe that
they are portable. strollers were perhaps the former equivalent, although now
the baby bucket fits onto a stroller frame, so the baby never has to be
touched, just moved.

my point here is that no one is going to judge a mother who uses a sling
sometimes and a baby bucket other times, but babies will sleep in a sling,
usually better than in a plastic bucket. and if we lived in a world where
everyone around you clamored to hold the baby while you did something where
holding the baby was "inconvenient" (hey, mothers can go to the bathroom with
a baby in a sling, and just about everything else), this would be a moot
point.

although my youngest has, indeed, passed out of the carrying around stage, i
do give advice to "young" mothers (young in years or young in experience)
that may seem hard or demanding, but it is accurate. i carry my friends'
babies around, and keep my friends' toddlers, and i have not forgotten how
physically demanding it can be. it's a slippery slope. let's excuse mothers
of a baby in a bucket by saying "maybe it is just a one time thing, she needs
to not carry the baby close to her in a much easier conveyance," or "she
doesn't have a sling, doesn't know about them," etc.

if you "believe" in using car seats, would you excuse a mother who didn't use
one "once in a while" or would you act upon your belief by doing everything
possible to help her see that she *had* to use a car seat, and to help her
get one?
