Well, naturally fermented breads and pickles are tought to contibute to a good
bacterial flora - in contrast to yeast. You are right that bread yeast and beer
yeast are two different kinds of bacteria - but I think everything that can
cause fermentation in the gut can cause loose stools (and lots of gas!), so
maybe it is more a how-much-of the substance-is used issue :)

Here we have a drink called "boza" - traditionally it was made from browned
millet flour, sugar and water and let to ferment for a few days which gives it a
bit of a pleasant sour taste (it looks horrible though, like a thick muddy brown
concoction). It was thought to have galactogogue properties (and certainly could
have had an effect against constipation) - and since it was a whole grain
product and fermented naturally, it could have had beneficial effects. The
problem is, now we have it comercially made - from stale white bread, yeast and
artificial sweeteners... and mothers still drink it, hoping it would help with
the milk supply.

So I was just curious if the brooddrank was something similar - that would have
been interesting, because although it is a popular drink here on the Balcan
peninsula and in Turkey, I haven't seen it anywhere else. But from the
descriptions it is not the same thing.

My thanks to all who answered my question - it is always very interesting to
learn such tidbits about food, drinks and traditional practices around the world
:)

Bacteria responsible for fermentation in normal bread (yeast), beer and
sourdough are of different kinds. I have no idea how each could affect
constipation or work in regard to other issues. In the Italian language
bread yeast is called "beer" yeast, but there is actually no relation. I
guess this contribute to a lot of confusion. And perhaps in other
languages there may be some similar confusion.
Beer is usually considered a galactagogue because of hop, as far as I
know, rather than for the fermentation bacteria, but here there may be
more than I know...
However, most bottled beers are pasteurized, which I believe kills all
bacteria. This is obviously not true for all beers (in Germany they may
have special regulation about this, for example), so you should check
for each brand and kind to have reliable informations...
Hope you are not too disappointed! :-)
