It's interesting how context plays a role in our perceptions. When I looked
up the words "fail" or "failure" in the dictionary and/or thesaurus, either
worded tended to have the same connotation in that someone didn't achieve
something. Yet context was everything, and "failure" had several definitions that
basically went from "screwing up" to "inability." An inability or limitation that
results in failure has a much different "feel" to it than a failure due to
screwing up or a poor performance due to effort exerted, yet the latter seems
the one coming to many of our minds regarding this discussion.

"Inadequate" and "improper," e.g. referring to latch, are similar in that we
or mothers too easily go for the definition/connotation that refers to a
conscious decision-making role. Like Winnie that's probably why I favor the word
"ineffective" when possible. It has less of a "consciousness" feel to it and
more of an "ability" feel -- at least for me. And it seems easier to make the
point and avoid the less favorable connotations with other health professionals.

While we're on this, may I throw in my distaste for "incompetent" cervix,
etc. for similar reasons of connotation? Thanks, I feel better...

To all on your way to Oz, have a great time and learn lots! To those on pins
and needles with Monday's exam almost here, GOOD LUCK! I'm sure you'll all
breeze through it!

Karen
