First, sorry that two of us listmoms responded almost simultaneously to an OT
thread.
Now, to Leslie's case...
Good for you, Leslie, for presenting this for input and for being so
conscientious about not overlooking anything. If you have a mentor they must
feel really safe, knowing that you will ask if you feel out of your league.
:-)

I am still wondering how much the baby weighed at birth, and how much the baby
weighed when mom started back to work (I wrote 'age' rather than 'weight' when
mom returned to her other job, sorry!), and how much the baby weighs now. With
those pieces of information you can calculate average weekly gain for all those
periods.
It is normal for babies to slow down in growth rate in the course of the first 6
months of life. If they didn't they would be the size of aircraft carriers by
their first birthday and franchise restaurants would not be eager to host the
parties. So, is this baby's rate of growth actually abnormal? I don't feel I
have enough data on which to judge.
The first 'failure to thrive' baby I ever saw had been referred to a
breastfeeding clinic (not in my home area) and presented as a plump, happy,
lively 8 month old girl who was ahead of expectations developmentally and was
thriving ever since mother stopped eating dairy. The mother reported that the
doctor had insisted on a referral when mother was unwilling to stop BF in favor
of weaning to formula, after two consecutive weights over a two month period
showed low gain. The problem was, during those two months the baby had had a
serious respiratory illness AND gastroenteritis, had been seen multiple times
by the same doctor for both illnesses, without having been weighed once. So
nobody knew how much she had lost with either episode, and thus nobody could
tell whether the baby's current weight was too little, but a quick look at the
baby told us that whatever might have been the matter, FTT was not part of it.
