I had a mom call today to ask when she could breastfeed after smoking one
marijuana joint. Baby is 5 months old. I did read Hale which does not really give
this information (on when to nurse after smoking) and read the Breastfeeding
Answer Book. It was suggested I read Jack Newman's book on the subject. It
does say that he is not advocating the use of marijuana and that the long term
effects are not known. He says, "No evidence suggests that it is harmful to the
baby to be exposed to small amounts that would be present in the milk." His
last sentence is the one I am struggling with, " Breastfeed, and if you must
light up from time to time, take it easy."

I was wondering what your professional opinions are as to what you would say
to a mom that really wants to nurse but has done this. Is there any other
research that states when this substance may be out of the milk? I read that it
could show up in the mom's urine for 2-3 weeks and I am supposed to tell her to
go ahead and breastfeed?
