My theory is that "nipple confusion" is a catch-all phrase for a
number of potential difficulties a baby may have going from bottle
to breast (or vice versa). ( You can substitute pacifier, finger,
or whatever for bottle.) Every difference between bottle and breast
can be a point of confusion for any baby. Each one responds
differently. One baby may not seem to care what the nipple feels
like in its mouth, but gets frustrated if he doesn't get "immediate
gratification". (First suck at a bottle gets a mouthful whereas it
may take a few sucks to initiate the flow at breast.) For another
baby, it doesn't matter whether the milk flows immediately or not,
but he may not like the difference in texture between breast and
bottle.
I have been working at compiling a list of the differences, how baby
may exhibit having difficulty with each and suggestions for
overcoming each potential "confusion". I will be presenting what I
have so far at the May WALC meeting. I would appreciate any
suggestions, input any of you may have as I continue with this "work
in progress".

Winnie
