Also, could Fritzi clarify what she wrote: " Hospital grade pumps also
differ in that although they may reach as high a vacuum peak, they do not
sustain
it as well, and as smoothly, and thus do not provide as high of a prolactin
and oxytocin surge to then stimulate a sustained long term milk supply."
Two weeks ago the Medela rep stopped by and we were talking about the
Symphony vs. the Classic. We keep three Classics for rental to moms who need to
establish a milk supply. Even though I've told them that once they are
well-established with breastfeeding, that if they need a pump they can bring it back and
exchange it for a Lactina and save some money, none of them has.

We recently added a Symphony to trial as a rental pump. The rep said that the
Classic pump has a smoother transition from min to max to min again. If I
remember correctly Paula Meier is trialing Symphony's with the Classic pattern
on the computer card with mothers of preemies and mothers were liking it better.

I can tell you that my trial of one mother who is now using the Symphony is
that she used th Classic while in the hospital and likes the Symphony better
(with the regular Symphony pattern) for these reasons some peculiar to her: The
gentle, less intense start up is much preferred by her. She was quite
sensitive to the Classic's power even when started at the minimum setting and never
got close to tolerating the "normal" setting. She tolerated switching to the
stronger pull after letting down and pushing the let-dwon button. She likes the
look of the Symphony much better than the Classic. I dont' know , of course,
if with the Clasic pattern she'd like it better or not.
