Hi Merete and all,

Many years ago, when I was just a family doc with a very young baby and a
few notions about breastfeeding, we went to visit a friend who had just had
her first child. It was her third day postpartum and her milk was just
coming in. We spent the afternoon at her house (my goodness, I would never
do that to a new mom now!!!!) and as time went by she started to break out
in hives, all over her breasts and then her upper chest and her abdomen. It
worsened with let down (both with baby and with pump). This went on for a
couple of days until she decided to wean.

She had the exact same problem with her second baby, and stopped
breastfeeding at day 4.

I never knew what it was and, in fact, had not remembered until just now as
I read your post... I don´t think (but I might have recollection bias) that
it was the milk irritating her skin, it was clearly a systemic allergic
reaction, with big hives and horrendous itch - albeit only in breast/chest
and abdomen.

???

Hugs (specially to Norma!!!)
Kika
