The concern that infants should not be nursed to sleep because they will
never learn to fall asleep without eating has to be one of the most
ludicrous things I have heard. As an adult have you ever TRIED to fall
asleep while eating? It is extremely difficult .... try it... chew gum
tonight while you fall asleep. Of course it is possible if you are
extremely tired but it is not something most adults can do comfortably. I
suspect that when the physiology of the airway changes from infancy to
childhood, eating while lying down, particularly as you relax, compromises
your airway. Frankly the fact that you and I do not routinely fall asleep
while eating has nothing to do with training by our parents and everything
to do with our anatomy. This is another red herring brought about by some
so-called expert that only serves to stress new parents further... sigh.
