One mom I worked with had this very severely. She was determined to
breastfeed but the pain kept her from any sleep or activity and
breastfeeding sessions were the ultimate nightmare. One physician diagnosed
it as "mastalgia" and when general anti-infammatories didn't give much
relief, placed her on a low dose of valium to use only during severe
sessions. This actually worked but the thing that helped this mom the most
was when she returned to work and had a drop in her milk supply, the
severity and frequency of pain diminished and for the most part has now
disappeared. It appears she was one of those "over producers"! Thankfully
she still makes a great amount of milk for baby but at a lessened volumn
more in keeping with infants needs without overdistending I guess....
