The British Medical Journal has a pre-publication online article on
pacifiers and SIDS that can be accessed for free at
_http://bmj.bmjjournals.com/cgi/rapidpdf/bmj.38671.640475.55_
(http://bmj.bmjjournals.com/cgi/rapidpdf/bmj.38671.640475.55) . After a quick look through it, I am again disappointed that the
authors have failed to indicate whether or not any of the infants were
habitual pacifier users prior to the SIDS event. They also do not state whether
the control infants were habitual pacifier users. Without this piece of
information it is difficult to know what the real effect of pacifiers are on infants
who are dependent on them to regulate breathing during sleep as well as
infants without such a need. I am concerned that this paper will once again boost
the inappropriate use of pacifiers with breastfed infants. We have nurses in
some of the local hospitals already pushing pacifiers on new parents. I
wonder how long it will be before we see pacifiers in formula company discharge
bags!
