I too teach Lamaze & have 15 yr old - 47 yr olds having babies. I love
doing selling. I liken bf to driving a stick shift & bottle feeding to
automatic transmission. If the baby gets easy feeding lst, won't want
to breastfeed. Those who learn on stick shift can drive anything once
they get confidence on stick.
Try hooking mom on brain food, shrinks tummy faster, always available,
good excuse to sit & nurse baby while others work. I toss out BF facts
information in every class. I see more & more teenagers trying to bf.
encourage all preg women to bring older women to class as well as baby's
father. Dad often feels bad/guilty when laboring mother has pain. Women
know that pain is good & mom won't die from pain (use menstrual cramps
as illustration). The older women are my allies & can encourage younger
woman to move during labor - more productive contractions - less need for
medication that will interfer with bf. The older woman hears what I
teach about knowing if baby is getting enough milk. She often calls me
when she believes things aren't going as well as they should. With
early discharge, new parents have to be warned about what is important to
observe. Hope this is helpful.
