Hi Lactnetters,

I've been nomail for several months due to being pretty overwhelmed but I
have a problem that I'd like to run by everybody. Please send responses to
me directly.

In my LLL Group we have a mother of an 18 month old daughter. For about the
last six months she has had problems with eczema on both her breasts. She
had quite a bit of trouble getting a diagnosis but finally went to a
dermatologist and had a skin scraping. The doctor prescribed topical
cortisone and recommended that she wean. At this time, weaning is not an option.

The eczema does respond to the cortisone if she uses it several times a day
but she is worried about the effect it is having on her and her baby. Also,
as soon as she cuts down on the use, the rash comes back. The rash almost
totally covers both of her breasts including the areolas and nipples.

Rather than just suppressing the symptoms, this mother would like to find a
cure for the eczema. She has tried just about everything we can think of
such as dietary changes, changing detergents, changing soaps, etc. She has
also tried homeopathy and some Chinese medicine. After trying several
remedies, the homeopath finally gave up.

Has anyone else dealt with a similar case? This mom has a great attitude and
is very committed to breastfeeding but is about at her wits end. Any
insights, help, etc. would be greatly appreciated. I'd also like permission
in advance to share any responses with this mother directly so let me know
if that's okay.

Thanks!
