G'day!
I have been pondering the role of nipple stimulation in both prolactin
and oxytocin release and was just wondering whether anyone has ever
tried TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) to get
breastfeeding going or augment what is already happening naturally.

Nipple stimulation via pumping or manually stimulating nipples all need
time and effort and are not that easy to do discretely (although i am
sure there are stories out there of very determined women aiming to
feed adopted babies who have overcome this). Whereas TENS could
be worn all day at work and noone need know! It could be turned on
and off at appropriate intervals to mimic a feeding infant.

ONe problem I could imagine is the possible skin reaction to the
adhesive used on the transducers. The skin transducers would need to
avoid the nipple itself and possibly a donut shape would be best, or
maybe just crescent shaped hugging the lateral and inferior sides of
the nipple from where most cutaneous nerve supply comes
supposedly.

Love to hear if anyone has ever tried this!
I'd even be game if you needed a volunteer!
please send replies to me privately as well as the list as i don't always
get a chance to read lactnet for some reason....
