Is there anyone who is currently "skimming" breastmilk for a baby with
chylothorax? I work in a Children's Hospital, and we frequently encounter this
condition. Over the years, I've been in touch with Trish (Bobby's story) and
have put many hours into trying to come up with a protocol, but, ran into too
many road blocks. My engineering skills are nil, and the person in our lab tried
to help me pick out a centrifuge, but, funding was a problem, what type of
containers to use to pull off the fat - as well as what would the patient do
when they are discharged.
One of our nutritionists feels skimmed breastmilk would be better for these
patients than the Portagen we are now using. She is willing to work with me -
surely, there is someone else out there who is doing this! At one time, I
remember hearing that using a "gravy separater" would work. Has anyone
actually done this?
I would appreciate any input.
thanks,
Becky Lyons, LD, IBCLC
Children's Healthcare of Atlanta
