I'm sure we're all getting a little tired of this thread of discussion but I
think it is coming to something. I think we need to start bringing our ideas
together and talk to those who help make these requirements. I'm sure this
is a very difficult thing to put together. I know ASPO struggles
continuously with how to account for their certification programs. A fair
test (IBCLC) is hard to put together and they have done a great job of
continually reevealuting the test questions and trying to improve the test.
I think the profession has progressed to a point that some element of
observed skills could be done. In the ASPO certification years ago a student
had to be observed teaching by a certified person this person then sent in an
evaluation (I think thats how it went....it's been many years ago for me)
Could this be another pathway. This is an infant profession and we are
experincing a normal stretching out....sometimes it gets a little thin on the
very edge but...we have some incredibly wise and skilled people out there and
the information is getting out. Our yearly conference brings the very best
together and even the people who have very little skill have to get the
required CERPS and they can't help but soak up a lot by pure osmosis if
nothing else. Teach to moms, grandmas, Drs, nurses at every possible moment
you'd be surprised who might be listening.
I think it's important to keep in mind too that an RN, and one who has an
advanced degree especially is skilled in assessment, planning, and evaluation
of the whole family. These skills are essential for the professional IBCLC.
