in response to Betsy Riedel's post "There is some incorrct information on
there that is being distributed by the government. Go to the breastfeeding
information page and read through some of it. I wrote to them about their
suggestions to limit time at the breast to 15 minutes per side. Yuk!
There is probably other bogus information on that site. If you read through
it and then go to the "contact us" page, you can find a place to write in
your responses.......Let's see what else we can find that might need to be
corrected."

In "An Easy Guide to Breastfeeding" by The US Dept of Health and Human
Services Office of Women's Health (May 2004)(and I guess endorsed by LLLI
since they're on the back cover)
(http://www.womenshealth.gov/pub/BF.General.pdf), the only thing that
bothered me was "When Should I Wean My Baby?" (the answer was "It is
recommended that babies be exclusively BF for the first six months. You may
continue to BF through the first year of life and longer if you and your
baby wish.") I think it would've been better worded "How long should I BF?"
and to include WHO's recommendations of 2 years or longer.
Then 'when to wean? was addressed again in the "questions to ask your health
care provider about BF" section. uh oh, if it's an OB or ped office where
the formula reps have free reign, I don't want to hear the answer! Again,
I'd rather see the parents ask their HCP "how long should I BF?" and of
course for them to be given correct info.
So I will write in to suggest dropping the "wean" word from a pamphlet
about how to get started. It reminds me of a family I saw in the hospital
last year on their second day pp- the dad asked me 3 different times during
my visit exactly how to and when to wean. I tactfully explained we need to
get BF well estrablished before worrying about how and when to stop it. He
was adamant about when knowing exactly how and when to get the baby to stop
BF! I wanted to scream!
