In response to the queries about a baby with gas, bloating, bloody stools, etc: this can be such an extremely intense and frightening issue, and I have never (once again) read anything which addressed this issue in its seriousness.
However, I have had two mothers (both of whom ultimately BF for well over a year) who went through hell with these symtpoms, advice from pediatricians to "stop" or "add formula". In each case the mother was so committed (they knew each other, but the babies were several years apart)that she flew with her baby to a well-known pediatric gastro enterologist in the New England are. Each was treated by the GI woman and consulted with a nutritionist. It was determined that these babies had multiple allergy-type problems. The mothers were placed on very restrictive elimination diets, and as time went on moved into macrobiotics (fish, no meat, some chicken, brown rice, barley). The babies did very well, and have proven to be extremely allergic (one boy, now aged 19, has remained on this diet---yes, for breakfast, lunch, and supper, 24/7). He has wheat/gluten and dairy allergies as well as many others.
Can only hope these experiences will be helpful, and am, as usual, terribly grateful for this site.
