Mimi is so right.  I think that any time there is a chance to refer an
alcoholic to any kind of treatment the effort should be made.  I have known
of many miracles of recovery in 12 Step programs, and personally know many
wonderful alcoholics in recovery who are the best of parents.  It's a
disease and requires treatment and daily therapy (working the program.)
