I agree with Sharon Knorr, and would like to add this.
The newer bottle nipples (teats) that look more like a "Playboy-type"
breast also look more like an engorged breast. They have short nipples
attached to a globular base. As Sharon said, when a baby latches on to one,
he can only take the very short nipple into his mouth and his lips are
forced to evert over the globular base. In contrast to this, when nursing a
baby takes a much larger portion of the breast into his mouth, elongating
the tissue into a cone-shaped teat.
When explaining this to parents I like to use a soft, knitted breast model.
I show them how the model looks like a breast-shaped bottle nipple, and
then I pull on the model's nipple to show how it would look in a baby's
mouth when he is nursing.
I also like to explain that to date there are NO artificial nipples that
work like the real thing, how ever much they are promoted as being "more
like mother."

encourage a wider gape, but the if they can't elongate and soften like the
real thing, the baby may not appreciate the aesthetics.<
