Well for crying out loud already. So the mom I wrote about a few days ago -
the one whose hubby has von willebrand's, mom has wheat sensitivities as
well as a host of other allergies, both parents have GI issues, the baby has
not been gaining weight properly and has been having light to medium brown
fouls smelling stools (whose ped said were just fine.) went to a new Ped
today. They got sent home with three 8oz cans of Similac Isomil Advance Soy
Formula and directions to feed the baby at least an ounce of it after
breastfeeding twice a day, come back in a month for a weight check and the 6
month old shots. Mom states Dr sounded willing to do testing, but won't
before they try formula, and that he didn't seem interested in the
breastmilk intake results. Per mom, "He also pretty much said that his
concern was the baby, that my diet issues weren't so relevant, and wasn't
interested in weights other than current and birth."

What the???? I did a consult and baby does have some really tight muscles
(neck and back) that appear to be making her tongue look and act tied, but
there is no snug frenulum to be found. I have seen this before many times
so am confident in my evaluation. When I see this I send the baby for
treatment and the muscles ease up and the tongue no longer looks tor acts
tied. :-) They were referred to my Practioner who can take care of that
aspect. The latch and everything else were fine. However, mom had been
only nursing on one breast per feed, which (according to the pre/post
weights) was not enough for a full meal. She has been instructed, by me, to
switch nurse every feeding giving baby 2 times on each breast (or more), to
nurse nurse nurse - snacks, meals, in-between snack snacks.in other words
nurse as often as possible or as often as the baby will. Mom is highly
allergic so we are doing research to see what galactogogues she can safely
take (any thoughts here?) to increase her supply. In her first 24 hr time
period baby took in 18 ounces. Not great, but sure could be worse.

My oh my.when will people catch a clue?

Frustrated in Sac.
