Dear All, please help me out. We have just had an influx of new
anaethetists, who have started ordering that women who have ropivacaine
hydrochloride (naropen) in their epidurals, either in birth suites or for
their caesarean sections, express and dump their first two breastfeeds,
with the babies given comps instead. Needless to say I am horrified. I
work in Australia so I don't know if it has a different name elsewhere. I
have checked the archives but no listing. Tom Hale doesn't have it in his
book, and mims states that it is unsafe in pregnancy/lactation. My concern
is that this is the medication predominately used in our unit, and
previously we have not had to get the mums to express. Can someone help me
out with some evidence to support the fact that the mums can safely feed
(or not if that is in fact the case)
Thanking you in advance,
Margaret Wendt RN RM (anxiously awaiting the results in october)
