Meetings are being held around the state of Ohio, I would encourage any
person interested in Ohio's children to attend. It is an overview of the
budget for Ohio, specifically the child services.

They claim to be "the non-partisan voice of nearly 3 million Ohio children"
yet there is absolutely no word about breastfeeding. The HEALTHY portion
considers infant mortality rate, low birth weight, immunizations (I would
rather they were referred to as vaccinations) and asthma prevalence, yet,
again, no word on breastfeeding.

We were asked for input on the guidelines, and I brought up breastfeeding.
The woman running the meeting got defensive with my use of language. When I
suggested that "lack of breastfeeding contributes to high infant mortality,
obesity, asthma, she corrected me to frame "a more positive model of speech"
(breastfeeding prevents.) To which I stated that since breastfeeding is the
norm, this is the positive model of speech. She then suggested my model of
speech caused women to feel guilty, including herself (because she had one
baby who did latch, one who didn't) and cut me off.

So, if anyone else in Ohio would like to attend meetings, check out

It would be nice for them to hear from all over the state the "positive
model of speech" which frames breastfeeding as the norm. And, if you're
going to be the state's child advocate, the voice should start at birth.

Best wishes,

Sam Doak

We're going to Candy Mountain, Charlie!
