Two of us who are (non-RN) IBCLCs are paid equivalent to new grad RNs. The
3rd of our team is an RN/IBCLC, so the hospital designated her the Lead and
she receives (my estimate) $2 to $4 more per hour than we do. She says her
pay is not equivalent to what she received as an L&D RN in another state.

This year because we are a govt hosp and the govt is leaking $$$, there
were raises only for RNs who have more than 10 yrs' experience and who
currently give direct patient care. They were nice raises, an effort to
keep them on staff instead of going to work at a for-profit hospital or
into the Float Pool, but this passed over our RN/IBCLC coworker, or
RN/NIDCAP specialist, and others who, Admin says, don't provide "direct
patient care". Several Depts have been hit by layoffs. Those of us who were
not in line for these raises did not even have a job performance review
this year. No reason to. There was no raise to be earned.

We 3 LCs are limited to 40 hrs per week; no overtime authorized. We do get
paid holidays and a small weekend differential, but that's it.

There is a Float Pool RN who has completed a BF Counselor course and would
love to work as a BF Counselor, but our RN/MGR has refused consideration.
There is no way the hosp will pay for a BF Counselor at Float Pool RN
wages. Yes, she could earn her clinical hours with her own patients - very
slowly, but earning her IBCLC won't improve her wages or advance her RN
career, at least not in this community.

Our NIDCAP specialist has been an RN at this hosp for 18+ years working
postpartum, NICU, & other nurseries. She tells us that the most experienced
NICU RNs who work 2 more 12 hour shifts in addition to their standard 12
hour, 3 days a week, have earnings into 6 figures annual. Again,
professional secrecy keeps me from knowing exact dollars. NICU RNs have
amazing skills; don't get me wrong. It's the secrecy I'm talking about.

PS: All this salary secrecy just tells me that some are getting less than
they could, or more than they should. I come to this hosp from a state govt
agency where everyone's employment grade had a number and a public,
published pay range. You still had to earn your way up the ladder, but
there was a comfortable feeling of fairness for hard work rewarded, average
work stalling your advances, and sloppy work earning you an open door out.
