Talking to a new mom with a baby in NICU today. She said she wanted
to give baby both breastmilk and formula "so the baby would get the
benefits of both"!! Sheeesh! She wasn't talking about the usual
"easier for mom", "dad can be more involved" etc that are commonly
given as reasons moms want to do both. In talking with her, she had
read all the "benefits" of breastfeeding and certainly wanted her
baby to get those, but the formula ads were very attractive also and
she didn't want baby to miss out on the "developmental benefits"
that formula now has. I talked a little about what the latest
additions were and their sources. She was dumbfounded. Sure points
out how the ads lead readers to exactly the conclusions the
companies want people to end up with.
