"I remind the mom (or whoever) that before being born, every need was
immediately
satisfied and baby didn't need to do anything. After birth the "free
ride" is over and they now have to ask for and work for their food.
It's like some haven't figured that out yet and may need some gentle
guiding and patience on our part. Some adjust to extrauterine life
quickly and others still seem to be in a "What happened, where am I?"
state."

This is something I too remind parents. Another thing I find helpful is
asking mom if she is exhausted and sore after delivery and when she says yes
I remind her that her baby is probably feeling the same and needs to recover
from the birth experience. (Most of our births are filled with
interventions and trauma).
