Dear Cindy,
     I don't doubt the truth of your example for one moment, but we cannot
use it as an example for all babies.  My favorite metaphor for nipple
confusion is this:

     I go to a dance class with a friend.  We learn two different dances.  My
friend can do both of them perfectly, and switch easily back and forth
between the two.  I mix up the steps, and can' t get either one right.  Just
because my friend has got all the steps right, does that mean there is no
confusion on my part?

     Babies are all unique.  I just helped a mom get her two month old on the
breast for the first time.  How did we do it?  Remove artificial nipples from
this baby's life.  It was clear to me that breastfeeding was not going to
happen without the removal of artificial teats.
