Another thing that helps is breast compression or hand-expression at the
breast. Although I can't find a direct reference for this use, it is
consistent with Jack Newman's case histories and suggestions. It seems
to improve positioning and helps "channel" the flow. One thing I have
noted is that mothers who start off with good to moderately abundant
supplies (and occasionally super-abundant) sometimes find their babies
even fussier after the 4-6 week adjustment period when the supply and
flow seems to have settled in nicely. In this case, though, it seems to
have been the case from the start, which is more common. These babies
seem hyper-aware of supply and flow, and breast compression provides a
simple, mechanical technique to regulate it.
