Dear Kathie,

Hale states that the blood nicotine level for patch users is 17
ng/mL vs 44 ng/ml. for the average smoker (pack a day??), so if
she was smoking and bf before, the baby will get much less
nicotine now that she is on the patch and not smoking. Has the
baby shown any effects so far from the nicotine consumption when
she was smoking - rapid heart beat, poor weight gain, vomitting,
severe colic? If not, then why be concerned about much lower
levels with the patch? Why not just continue bf and monitor baby
for symptoms?

What about the hazards of putting this baby on formula? Has she
been apprised of the short and long term dangers of formula? She
has the right to make an informed decision.

Warmly,
