I believe at the last printing of Ruth Lawrence's book there had still
not been any confirmed IgE responses to breastmilk in the literature.
Only an IgE response to breastmilk would constitute an allergy. The
conclusion is that there is as yet no such medical diagnosis as being
allergic to breastmilk. After close observation of one or more entire
feedings has r/o overactive MER and hyperlactation, as well as other
environmental or baby handling issues, it would be interesting to see
whether a careful elimination diet for the mother makes a difference.
If it did, of course, the conclusion would be that the baby was not, in
fact, allergic to breastmilk, but hypersensitive to minute traces of
molecules from the mother's diet. The fact that the milk which is
urped out an hour after feedings is curdled is a good sign that
digestion is proceeding appropriately. It would be very concerning if
the milk were not curdled.
