These are the cases that can give LCs a bad name. Didn't mom have a
checklist or get instruction on "how to know if baby is getting enough".
Maybe there was a language barrier. Why didn't primary HCP intervene before
this? He is agreeing not to use formula, but IMHO it is indicated, unless mom
could express and feed enough - doubtful at this point - she will surely need
to build supply. It is mind boggling to me that bf was continuing without
intervention ( I assume ) until now. Cindy, so glad you will be seeing this
mom today. Obviously, she NEEDS TO BE SEEN. There were alot of red flags,
eg "baby breastfeeding CONSTANTLY, almost all day long...Mom reports baby
having infrequent stools". What about urine output? Whatever the problem
(suck, supply, positioning) it usually can be fixed. But most would agree, I
think, rule no. 1 is feed the baby! Then work on fixing the problem. This
family may/may not sue. But this is an opportunity to take this to risk
management/QA of hosp (if it was hosp birth) and point out what is needed to
prevent this. Hopefully there was documentation of education for this
family. If she does not speak English, there are Spanish printed materials
and videos on bf that the hosp could use.
Respectfully,
