While there may be overactive letdown in the mother Barbara Holmes posts on,
and there may be overproduction as well in a mother who can pump four ounces
at one time, I don't think it explains his weight pattern. He is now a month
old and is about five per cent below birth weight. In the past week, he has
lost two ounces instead of gaining three times that, which is what we
normally expect in a baby of this age and size.
We know his birth weight, his weight *but not his age* at discharge from
hospital, and we know that he was nearly nine per cent under birth weight
after a week and a half. We don't know whether he was on his way up or down
in weight on day ten, all we know is the net difference between discharge
weight and day ten. It is entirely possible that he lost even more weight
but was on his way to regaining it when seen for the first time by Barbara.

I hope we get to hear what the GI referral shows. A baby who regurgitates
large amounts on waking from naps that last several hours, and is not
gaining weight despite manifestly abundant milk production in the mother,
should be thoroughly examined. It could even be pyloric stenosis, which
normally doesn't manifest itself fully until babies are taking larger
amounts at feeds.
