I missed the first post on this nipple confusion stuff, but I want to say
that I feel strongly, very strongly, that if we are going to supplement a
baby, then it should be done at the breast with a lactation aid (or SNS).  A
lot of the excuses for not using it don't hold water.  If we ourselves are
negative about it, surely the mother will be too.

Why is it better than a cup, syringe, finger feeding, bottle or whatever?
Because, get ready for it... The baby is on the breast and breastfeeding!
There is more to breastfeeding than breastmilk.  And babies learn to
breastfeed by breastfeeding.

Yes, sometimes it is difficult to use.  Yes, sometimes the mother just
won't.  But that's not a reason for not trying it as a *first* choice.  And
the bottle is at the bottom of the choices, and sometimes a bottle needs to
be used.
