“In dealing with my NICU population, most of my mothers that get a Depo
shot
lose their milk supply…..Is anyone else seeing this, especially with mothers
who are strictly pumping and no direct breastfeeding?”

I am seeing this all of the time in our NICU. The moms receive the depo
shot prior to leaving the hospital. They are exclusively pumping. Most
have very low birthweight babies who need maternal milk desperately. They
produce some milk in the first week and then the supply dwindles. One mom
even took reglan, but to no avail. I plan to speak with the chair of
obstetrics to see what can be done. It is so frustrating….
Donna, IBCLC
