Sarah, As to your question about circ. and feeding instructions
beforehand, there are still mohelim ( ritual cutters) who say that the
baby shouldn't be fed for two hours prior to the procedure, but should
be given water. I think the reason here is fear of aspiration, as if it
is ok to aspirate water and not breast milk!! The more modern mohelim,
and the now new generation of docs who perform the procedure with local
anesthetic, say a half an hour.
I advise the moms to be ready immediately to nurse the babies right
after for the soothing effect.
Another interesting tid bit one of our moms told me: in Jewish law, the
circ (brit mila) is done on day 8. I had a mom recently who is a
hematologist and we were discussing the astounding properties of breast
milk. She was in hysterics about the brit and I was trying to calm her
down. I had remembered reading something about the presence of
something in breast milk on day 8 that affects coagulation and prevents
infection. She said that is is called Factor 8 and it is not something
I dreamt, but a real property. Does anyone know anything about Factor 8
in breast milk?
I once read an article somewhere that babies who are being nursed during
a painful procedure such as immunization experience less pain. Does
anyone remember such an article, or am I hallucinating again? I think
it was done in Australia.
As for circs causing bf problems, I had one baby recently who was sleepy
and non responsive at the breast, almost no latch and the mom was
expressing and spoon feeding. The circumcision must have woken him up
because from that moment on, the baby nursed like a pro!!
You never know.........
Esther Grunis, IBCLC, who is drowning in an epidemic of suck problems,
even in non-epidural babies......are humans experiencing evolutionary
suck changes?
