Dear Traci,
     You are right that many references support breastfeeding within one hour
after birth.  However, there are many situations which can also affect both
milk supply and milk transfer, such as frequency of feedings, and how the
baby is sucking.  I would think that a complete assessment, including pre and
postnatal history, assessment of anatomy of mother and baby, and observation
of breastfeeding would be in order, to try to ascertain the cause of the slow
weight gain and need for supplementation.  This must have been a very trying
time for you.
