i have noticed the same problems here locally; LCs state that the tube
feeding device is "awkward and difficult to use and moms really don't want to
use them" but upon further discussion it turns out that the person suggesting
the use of the device is uncomfortable with them and finds them difficult and
doesn't want to encourage themother to use them. when its presented as
difficult and unpleasant and not the right choice, then its hardly surprising
when mothers don't use them. it also takes a good deal of time to get someone
set up with one and using them easily.

i use a 5Fr tube for short term needs, and then use the lactaid brand
supplementer with moms who need to use one for a longer time or who don't
want to use just the tube. i spend a lot of time with them teaching how to
use whichever. i don't just say "use this alternative feeding device (tube,
syringe, cup, whatever)" without instruction. its hard to get compliance when
you do that, or to know if they are using the device correctly.

then again, bottles are so "normal" and its hard to discourage their use in
favor of something else.
