Dear Friends:
The United States Breastfeeding Committee is a huge step forward. There
has never been one before. It is the culmination of many years of dedicated and
unpaid work from a variety of leaders in the lactation field. These leaders
are still devoted to advancing breastfeeding in the US; having the Committee is
no guarantee that all will change quickly. The Committee is formal
recognition that the work is important.
Unfortunately, I can't think of a single woman's organization in the US
that has the political support or power necessary to make huge changes at one
fell swoop. We are fighting for recognition against enormous odds.
Collaboration, sitting down at one table, even with groups that are not
as supportive as some of us would like, is, in my opinion, the only answer.
    warmly,
Nikki Lee RN, MS, Mother of 2, IBCLC, CCE, CIMI

Film Reviews Editor, Journal of Human Lactation
